Summer festivities – Azeitão, Portugal

Throughout the Summer everywhere in Portugal, in every little town people come together to celebrate summer, disguised as a particular saint – the patron saint from that particular town, I mean usually at least.

Azeitão is a small town about half an hour from Lisbon, it is also my home town, and every year the festivities are the time to meet old friend, – friends you end up not seeing, otherwise, the rest of the year. It symbolises summer and some very specific food groups.

unfortunately they only last for a couple of days, and with the economy (we are after all the P in PIGS* ) they have, almost everywhere, been cut to half. This time around, the four days hardly felt enough.

Anyway I was to entertained chatting and took almost no pictures, and hardly any good ones, maybe next year I’ll do better.

  1. But really, the first picture….I do hope that sign behind the counter has additional letters in it??? sorry…it caught my eye…. LOL

    • Hahahah I had not even noticed it – it reads Farturas which is a savoury pastery that you can fill with chocolate and other stuff or just cover with sugar and cinammon! They are really good 🙂

  2. Just discovered your blog and I am loving the photography! I like how you pointed out that this isn’t just any festival, this is your home town festival and therefore symbolizes summer and catching up with friends. Looks like you had a great time!

    • I am so glad you found my blog – and especially happy you liked what you saw! It is particularly great to catch up with friends and gives it a whole diferent feel! 🙂 thank you so much for the comment 😀
